What is Chess Novelties?
This project attempts to find the most interesting and promising “theoretical novelties” that are played recently in chess competitions and tournaments. Such an overview might be useful for competitive players, as a source of inspiration for new opening ideas or to keep track of the latest developments in opening theory.
How are the best novelties selected?
To evaluate the quality of a novelty, several parameters are taken into account, such as the computer evaluation, the popularity of the position, etc… The best novelties are selected in a fully automated way, without human review or intervention.
Which chess database is used?
The novelties are selected from the games published in the weekly update of TWIC, which contains the games of the most recent chess competitions and tournaments. Therefore, in this project, the novelty of a game is defined as the first new move in the TWIC database. Other databases, e.g. databases of online games or games of computer engines, are not taken into account.
Which chess engine is used?
The positions are evaluated using Stockfish 18, until depth 30.
